Despite their ecological importance and cultural significance, African elephants face numerous threats, mainly from human activities. Habitat loss, fragmentation and conflicts with growing human populations have severely restricted their range. Each year, African Wildlife's Somalia Elephant issue highlights these magnificent animals with a new design honoring the largest land mammal on planet Earth.
The Bavarian State Mint's Somali national emblem is featured on the front of the 2,025 1 oz silver coins with the elephant motif. This seal of the Republic of Somalia includes a shield in the middle with horizontal lines and a single star. The shield is supported by a leopard on each side and a beaded element is located at the edge of the design field.
The reverse side of the 2025 silver Somali elephant features a lone elephant marching through the savannah this year. As the elephant marches into the foreground, trees and shrubs are visible in the near foreground, while mountains stretch into the distant horizon. In the upper corner, the sun rises into the sky.
The African elephant's diet is varied and hearty, with adults eating up to 300 kg of plants a day. Their feeding habits, which include crowding trees, stripping bark and creating clearings in dense vegetation, have a significant impact on their environment. These behaviours help maintain open grasslands, create pathways for other animals and disperse seeds, earning elephants the label 'ecosystem engineers.
