THE LION'S GATE
The second part of the "Gates of Jerusalem" series
The Lion's Gate, one of the eight gates in the walls of Jerusalem's Old City, is located in the eastern wall, near the Muslim Quarter, opposite the Mount of Olives. The Golden Gate, which remains closed, is also located in the Eastern Wall. The "Lion's Gate" is so called because of the two carved lions that decorate both sides of the gate. It is said that during the Ottoman rule in the Land of Israel, Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent requested the carving of the lions based on a dream in which he was warned that if he did not defend Jerusalem by building a wall around the city, he would be eaten by lions. He built the Lion Gate in 1538-1539.
The Lion's Gate is also known as "Jehoshaphat's Gate" because it faces the Valley of Jehoshaphat, the Kidron Valley, among other places.
The Israel Defense Forces Airborne Brigade entered the Old City of Jerusalem through the Lion's Gate when it liberated the Western Wall in the Six-Day War.
