First Holy Communion is a Christian rite during which a person receives the Eucharist for the first time.
It is usually celebrated in a solemn manner; in the Orthodox and Eastern Orthodox Churches, as well as in the Eastern Catholic Churches, First Communion is given in conjunction with Baptism, even in the case of infant baptism. In some denominations, First Communion is part of the rite of Confirmation at some point in adolescence or adulthood.
In churches that celebrate a First Communion rite separate from Baptism or Confirmation, it usually occurs between the ages of seven and thirteen. In the Western Catholic Church, children come to First Holy Communion after about one year of catechetical preparation, usually around the age of nine. The preparation should build on the one or two years of religious instruction already completed. First Holy Communion is usually organized in parishes once a year in May or early June. It is celebrated in a solemn manner at Sunday Mass with parents and godparents present. The Mass is usually followed by a group photo or celebration. Before First Holy Communion (often the day before), future first communicants come to their first confession. In the Catholic Church, a believer who has already received First Holy Communion is obliged to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation at least once a year.
