The Canadian Maple Leafs, first minted in 1979, were the first coins made of 24-karat gold (first fine 999 and then 999.9). The original 1 ounce coins (CAD 50 denomination) were replaced by 1 ounce coins (CAD 50 denomination) in subsequent years.
The obverse shows Queen Elizabeth II looking to the right and the inscription "ELIZABETH II 50 DOLLARS."
The reverse depicts a maple leaf with the inscription "CANADA 9999 FINE GOLD 1 OZ ARGENT PUR 9999." The issuing country is the guarantor of purity.
The Canadian Mint mints gold, silver, platinum and palladium investment coins known as Maple Leaf coins because they depict a maple leaf. The coin was designed by Walter Ott. The coin also includes a security mark - a small maple leaf with the year of issue ending in, for example, "14" (visible under a magnifying glass). The security mark was made using the laser microfabrication technique used on all gold and silver Maple Leaf investment coins issued since 2014.
