Rand Refinery Limited was incorporated on 27 November 1920 as a private company with initial capital raised from shares restricted to gold mining companies that were members of the Chamber of Mines.

The ingots are stamped at the Rand Refinery in South Africa and conform to the Good Delivery standard. The ingots are minted from 24 carat gold. Each ingot is serial numbered.This foundry also mints the very famous Krugerrand coins. Proofs of authenticity (supplier's logo, refiner's logo, unique number, purity, weight) are declared on the upper side of the ingot.

The front of the coin indicates the maker, net weight in ounces, purity, unique number and the Rand Refinery logo. The reverse of the ingot depicts a repeating motif of passing elephants, mother and calf. The motif is complemented by the inscription "LOXODONTA".
