In 2021, Monnaie de Paris launched a series focusing on literary styles and authors who have made their mark on the history of literature in France and abroad. After celebrating poetry in 2021 and theatre in 2022, Monnaie de Paris will honour the famous adventure novelist Alexandre Dumas in 2024 on the occasion of the 180th anniversary of the publication of The Three Musketeers. This is the fourth coin in the "Art of the Pen" series.
On the front of these collectible coins, Alexandre Dumas is depicted face to face with his iconic characters: the Four Musketeers. They seem to have turned on him, pointing their swords at the author's nose. On Dumas's shoulder is engraved the famous line from the novel: "One for all and all for one". His name and the dates of his birth and death are engraved at the top and bottom of the coin, and the year is engraved in the collar.
The reverse is common to the entire "Art of the Pen" series. Several iconic quotes can be read, such as Voltaire's "Le mieux est l'ennemi du bien", Dante Alighieri's "Lasciate ogne speranza voi ch'intrate", William Shakespeare's "To be or not to be : that is the question" or Nietzsche's "Was mich nicht umbringt, macht mich stärker". The coin is engraved with a feather in the centre and the name of the series below it. At the bottom of the coin is the abbreviation " RF " and the hallmark of Joaquin Jimenez and the engraver's workshop.
