Ravana was the ten-headed king of the rakshasas and the arch-enemy of Prince Rama. He resided on the island of Lanka, identified with Sri Lanka, where he abducted Rama's wife Sita. He rode through the sky in a golden chariot. Rama defeated him in battle with the help of the monkey god. This victory is commemorated by the burning of his effigy filled with fireworks during the celebration of Vijayadashami.
