This area is the site of some of the oldest known Aboriginal occupation on the Australian continent. Human settlement in this area began about 40,000 years ago, with the highest level of activity beginning about 10,000 years ago. In 2003, a series of trace lines were found in the dry bed of Lake Mungo, one of the main lakes in the Willandra Lakes region. The obverse of the coin features an image of Queen Elizabeth II. This likeness of the Queen was first developed for the Royal Mint in 2015 and was created by Jody Clark. As of 2018, the portrait has been adopted for Australian coins by both the Perth Mint and the Royal Australian Mint. The reverse of the coin depicts a single footprint in the clay bed of Lake Mungo.
Mungo National Park
The dry Lake Mungo is part of the Willandra Lakes region, which is a World Heritage Site. Archaeological finds of human remains and artefacts dating back almost 50,000 years have been found here, the oldest ever in Australia. But more than the excavations, it's the strange desert atmosphere that draws people here, with its huge sand dunes, known as the Walls of China for their massiveness.
