To the North American natives, a bear was not just a bear. They considered them a supernatural being. In prehistoric myths, it was attributed with great strength and healing powers. In many legends, bears taught people about medicine and herbalism. There are also many stories in which they change their form to live unrecognized among humans.

On the obverse of the coin is a bear: raised high, opening its mouth and showing its teeth. The motif is framed by an ornament reminiscent of Native American arts and crafts.
