The Fairy Morgana, traditionally Morgan le Fay in English, also known by the names Morgaine, Morgain, Morgan, among others, is a powerful and mostly evil witch from the stories of King Arthur. Her name(fata Morgana, i.e. "fairy Morgana") carries an illusory optical phenomenon in the atmosphere.

As her name suggests (fay means fairy, a supernatural being), Morgan was originally depicted as a witch or otherworldly being rather than a human woman. The role of witch remained with her even after she began to be portrayed as a real woman and the sister of King Arthur. The character of Morgan was inspired Welsh mythologyin which the goddess Modron, known as "the daughter of Avallach", appears. Avallach was a Welsh god, but his name can also be interpreted as "the place where apples grow". This interpretation is related to the name of the island Avalon, the "Island of Apples", which has been associated with Morgan since she first appeared in literature.
