American Buffalo 1oz gold coins as produced by the United States Mint. The Buffalo - actually a Bison - is one of the newer gold coins from the United States, first issued in 2006.
The coins are 999.9 purity gold and were designed to compete with other 24k coins such as the Austrian Philharmonic and Canadian Maple, while taking attention away from the likes of the Britannia and Krugerrand.
The coins are the official gold coin and legal tender in the US. The coin features symbols of liberty based on Augustus Saint-Gaudens' design: on the obverse, we find the figure of Lady Liberty with flowing hair, holding an olive branch in her right hand, and the Capitol building to her left. The reverse side shows an eagle flying with an olive branch, landing in a nest with an eagle (design by Miley Busiek).
