The title character Beowulf and his enemy Grendel have been given the honour of being the seventh coin in the Myths and Legends series issued by the British Royal Mint.
Poem Beowulfestimated by scholars to have been written between the eighth and eleventh centuries, is the longest surviving poem in Old English. Aspects of Christian allegory can also be found in the poem, as the title character of Beowulf represents the struggle between good and evil and the first villain of the story, Grendel, is said to be a descendant of the biblical Cain.
The reverse by David Lawrence represents both Beowulf and his first enemy Grendel in an epic battle. Each coin is struck in 999.9/1000 pure gold and is finished to Royal Mint standard.
