American Gold Buffalo series
The American Gold Buffalo series was introduced in 2006 and represented a significant milestone as it was the first ever 24K gold coin from the U.S. Mint. The series was created in response to the growing demand for a high purity gold coin that could compete internationally, particularly with the Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coin. The Buffalo gold coin draws inspiration from the iconic 1913 Buffalo nickel design by James Earle Fraser, which is widely considered one of the most beautiful and enduring designs on American coins. The series is highly regarded by investors and collectors for its exceptional gold content and the rich symbolism of its designs, which reflect the American heritage and rugged spirit of the American West.
2025 American Buffalo Design
The design of the 2025 American Gold Buffalo coin continues the tradition established by James Earle Fraser's original Buffalo Nickel in 1913. The obverse features a composite portrait of three Native American chiefs - Big Tree, Iron Tail, and Two Moons - capturing the dignified and resilient spirit of Native Americans. The reverse side depicts a massive bison based on Black Diamond, a massive bison that lived at the Central Park Zoo in the early 20th century. Fraser's designs first appeared on the Buffalo Nickel coin, which quickly became an American classic. The faithful reproduction of these designs in 24k gold makes the American Buffalo a popular coin today.
