Maid Marian is the heroine of the legend of Robin Hood in English folklore, often thought to be his mistress. She is not mentioned in early medieval versions of the legend, but by 1600 she had become the subject of at least two plays. Her history and circumstances are unclear, but she was held in high esteem in Robin's circle for her courage and independence, as well as her beauty and fidelity. For this reason, feminist commentators celebrate her as one of the first strong female characters in English literature.
